Surface Preparation
The surface should be clean and free from dirt, oil, grease and loose sand particles. Dry and absorbent surfaces should be moistened with clean water before application. Old painted or lime-washed surfaces should first be scratched.
For old unpainted surfaces, loose material, organic growth, dirt and dust should be removed using a steel blade or wire brush. For old painted surfaces, the surface should be scrubbed with a coarse wire brush or sandpaper until the cementitious/plastered surface is visible.
For very rough surfaces, white cement or white cement mortar should first be used to level the surface, followed by curing for 2 days. Very smooth surfaces should be scraped with emery stone/paper to improve bonding.
